Under the Microscope:

The Celts - Part II

By AristotlesNite

Information

Unique Unit

Woad Raider - a very swift moving infantry unit, almost moving at the speed of cavalry.

Attributes

Infantry units move 15 percent faster, lumberjacks chop 15 percent faster, siege weapons fire 20 percent faster (have a quicker reload rate), and sheep aren't converted to an enemy if a Celt is within its line of sight.

Team Bonus

Siege workshop builds 20 percent faster.

Strengths

The Celts have three major assets which should be taken advantage of. The most important of these is their fast firing siege weapons, and the speed at which these are built. If they are used right, siege weapons can be very potent and level a town in minutes. Adding these two advantages can make the Celtic siege units down right lethal.

The second major advantage is a very fast infantry. If used right, a team of Celtic siege and infantry can pretty much be invincible if properly managed and used.

Needless to say having an advantage in gathering any resource in a game as economically driven as AoK is a big advantage. And the Celts are one of the top wood producing civs in the game.

Weaknesses

The Celts are one of the civs in AoK which don't receive any of the gunpowder units. The Celts are also missing a couple of other late game upgrades, including ring archer armor and bracing. The combination of these two missing technologies leads to archery units which could be vulnerable late in the Imperial Age. The Celts also lack block printing and illumination, impacting the effectiveness of their monks.

Tips

By nature the Celts are a very aggressive civ. Their superior speed, in both infantry and siege weapons, make them a quick-striking force, which can devastate an opponent in a few quick and well-timed moves. The Celts are also very wood rich, allowing them to build extensive forward bases, much more so then many other civs.

When attacking, try to attack in swarms. Again because of their speed, the Celts make an excellent hit-and-run civ. Attacking earlier and often can often times cripple and opponents economy, mortally wounding him for your bigger pushes coming in the Castle Age.

Be careful, however, in longer games. The Celts lose some of their spunk in the Imperial Age, missing a lot of the more advanced technologies. This could spell trouble against late blooming civs, like the Turks and the Britons.

Playing against the Celts

Expect to get harassed, early and often. The Celts will move much faster through the ages and try to pummel you with wave after wave of siege and infantry, so be on your toes.

The best thing you can do is not panic, and try to throw masses archery units at the swarming Woadies and siege. Also make sure to get squires, if available, to help neutralize some of the Celts infantry speed.

If your civ is better in the later ages, make sure to get to Imperial as soon as you can and get all the archery upgrades.
